Pine marten

  • Features

Chocolate-coloured fur, creamy throat, long slender body, and bushy tail. Legs are much longer than most other mustelids have. Soles are hairy in winter, which is why toes cannot be distinguished in its footprints.

  • Habitat

Coniferous and mixed forests with dense undergrowth are preferred. Pine marten can be met in an open treeless area only when on the prowl. Makes its den in a tree hollow, under tree roots or stumps, or uses old squirrel holes. Uses its den only when rearing cubs.

  • Size

Trunk length 50 cm, tail length 17-28 cm, body weight 1-2 kg.
