Soomaa Nature Centre

Viljandi County, Soomaa National Park
Soomaa Nature Centre is located in Soomaa National Park at Kõrtsi-Tõramaa. Soomaa National Park, founded in 1993, belongs to the Ramsar sites – wetlands of international importance. Its predecessors were the botanical reserve of Halliste wooded meadow, founded in 1957, and four wetland reserves: Kuresoo, Valgeraba, Kikepera and Öördi.
The National Park was established to preserve, protect, research and introduce the large bogs, flooded meadows, forests, landscapes and cultural heritage, and the balanced use of the environment in Central Estonia.
Here you can explore large bogs, floodplain forests and flooded meadows and the cultural history, and experience the fifth season of Soomaa – the flood. The hiking trails and observation towers of the National Park provide a good opportunity for that.

Exhibitions:

  • The Fifth Season 2010
The fifth season of 2010 was special – such water expanse had not been seen in Soomaa for over fifty years, remaining just below the flood of 1956.
Also the roads were flooded, causing problems to local people both for the water damage to animals and buildings, as well as for the things washed away or scattered by the high water. All this can be seen in the exhibition in Soomaa Nature Centre. The authors of the exhibition are Sandra Kübarsepp, Algis and Stella Martsoo.
