Northern Shore of Lake Peipus Recreation Area

RMK Northern Shore of Lake Peipus Recreation Area covers the area from Tammispää to Vasknarva. Here you can find the sand dunes of Järvevälja and Smolnitsa and the “singing” sands along the shores of Lake Peipus, the latter are indicative of the purity of the lake water. The landscape alternates with long dune ridges with bogs and marshes in-between. The recreation area is rich in rivers, which is good for organising boat rides and hikes at different levels of difficulty. Kurtna lakes, the area richest in lakes in the entire Estonia, with its more than 40 larger and smaller lakes spread over about 30 square kilometres, are situated in the recreation area.
The main objective of RMK Northern Shore of Lake Peipus Recreation Area is to promote recreation activities at the lake and offer the visitors a chance to pick wild berries and mushrooms. Next to the Kauksi campsite and dunes, which are as if created for lakeside recreation, you are welcome to hike on the Kotka study trail ending on the Rüütli bog island and try out the Selisoo hiking trail.
